We never had any where I grew up. I think I've always referred to them as fireflys.
My husband remembers calling them lightening bugs.
The first time I ever saw some, was while we were living in Massachusetts. I was about 27 years old, but our daughter was about 3 and she LOVED them! She knows them as fireflys.

It's always been lightning bugs with my family.
Fireflys . . . we used to catch them and put them in jars AND we used to take them and write our initials with their fluorescent glow! Eeewww!
I grew up in Indiana, where they are in abundance, especially in June and July. We called them by both names.
MRKH
I have to go with fireflies. The first time I ever saw one was when I moved to Virginia.
