Dear "Paul Harvey News and Comment" c/o ABC Radio

(sent today via email, probably into a big email trash can, but at least I feel better)

Dear "Paul Harvey News and Comment" c/o ABC Radio,

I enjoy listening to Paul Harvey weekday mornings as I drive to work. Today, however, I took exception to the way your substitute news reporter described the polygamist cult in Texas. The Yearning for Zion group is NOT a "renegade offshoot of the Mormon Church," as your program reported today.

I am inclined to believe this was an editorial oversight. Most, if not all, of the people affiliated with the Yearning for Zion group have never been members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For clarification on the matter, you may wish to visit the Internet newsroom of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: http://newsroom.lds.org/ldsnewsroom/eng/commentary/polygamy-investigation

Thank you.

He's alive! ;)

Good job for speaking up! I have only heard limited coverage about this story but was pleasantly surprised that in the covereage I did hear, there was no reference to Mormonism in any way. But like I said, I've only heard/seen limited coverage.

Some people define "Mormon" as someone who follows the teachings of Joseph Smith. This definition is more inclusive than just the Church of Jesus of Christ of Latter-day Saints. Just like how Protestants don't own the definition of Christian, the LDS Church doesn't own the definition of Mormon.

Hi Sariah!

Kim: Good point, and I agree with you on that.

Personally, I don't quibble when I hear "Mormon fundamentalist" or similar terms. It was the wording that linked the group with the "Mormon church" which I feel is different from simply using the term "Mormon". To the general public watching the media, it's all the same, I suppose.

But it IS an offshoot of our church.
